And done. Or at least nearly done. I'm happy with it all except the flag, which needs it's texture altering slightly to give it a more realistic look.
What's probably going to strike you as odd about this image is it's flatness. I'm only a budding concept artist, not a good one, so for the moment my best work is entirely anthropometric.
So what you think you're looking at, a man in armour with stubby legs is infact the front view of a cross between a centaur and a pile of old armour which is then covered in scratches, grease and a thin layer of a gold like substance. I imagined that the amount of gold on the machine could perhaps be a statement about class and position in the steamers world. With lowly robots entirely in steel and advisers and ambassadors mostly gold with a little steel. Of course if you've read the books you know what to expect then for King Steam.
This is a front line steam knight as I imagined them, just try to envisage two more sturdy legs behind the front pair. I experimented with giving him a rivet gun of some sort... and then discovered to my horror that I can't draw guns to save my life. So I replaced it with a shield.
P.S. The banner, incase anyone is interested, is actually one of those barcodes that work by you taking an image of it (just to make it clear, this one obviously doesn't work). The idea is simple, steam knights might use a banner for battle to identify their units in the field. A complex barcode like this in the banner would allow them to know the name of the unit, who commands it and any other tactical information they might need... including space left over for the binary equivalent of a striking logo for that unit.

I loved the first book, still waiting to get the next one. But very nice. I think what would have made this better is if it was drawn at a 3 quarters views so that we can get a better sense of depth.
